Pandemic a boon for telehealth services, adoption of healthier lifestyles

PETALING JAYA: The Covid-19 pandemic has been a boon for telehealth services and adoption of healthier lifestyles among Malaysians in the fight against cancer, says the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (AMM). “Cancer care did not receive the same level of attention this past year, as was the case in many countries throughout the world during the pandemic. “However, Covid-19 has had some positive impacts on our healthcare delivery system too, ” AMM said in a statement issued in conjunction with World Cancer Day 2021 on Thursday (Feb 4). The academy noted that the pandemic had accelerated the use of telehealth services for patients, including those with cancer, which helped bridge the access gap for the less mobile or those in the rural areas.

Cancer cases in Africa doubled in last 20 years

2 min read The number of cancer cases in Africa has doubled in the past 20 years, the Regional Director of the Ms Moeti in a message to commemorate the World Cancer Day (WCD) said new cancer cases in the region has increased from 338,000 cases reported in 2002 to almost 846,000 cases in 2020. “Over the past 20 years, new cancer cases have more than doubled in the African Region, from 338,000 cases reported in 2002 to almost 846,000 cases in 2020,” Ms Moeti said. She said the most common forms of cancer ravaging the region include breast, cervix, prostate, bowel, colon, rectum and liver. “The risk factors include older age and family history, use of tobacco and alcohol, a diet high in sugar, salt and fat, physical inactivity, being overweight, and exposure to specific chemicals, among others,” she said.

VIETNAM NEWS JANUARY 22  22/01/2021    09:45 GMT+7 Airlines adjust flights due to bad weather in Hanoi National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines, two carriers under the Vietnam Airlines Group, have announced adjustments to flights to and from Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport on January 21 due to unfavourable weather conditions. Two flights from Ho Chi Minh City, VN248 and VN7246, will land at Cat Bi Airport in the northern port city of Hai Phong. Two others from HCM City, VN7206 and VN320, are to be diverted to the central city of Da Nang, while another from Buon Ma Thuot is to land at Tho Xuan Airport in central Thanh Hoa province.

The Deputy Minister said: “5-10 years ago, over 70 per cent of breast cancer patients visited hospitals and got treated at a late stage. In recent years, thanks to the communication campaigns, especially the national project on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases including cancer, the rate of cancer patients getting medical examination and treatment in the early stage gradually increases.”
