Polio cases
July 2, 2021
In the middle of the 20th century, polio was one of the major issues that had engulfed the entire world. Today, polio has been eradicated in every country except in Pakistan and Afghanistan. These are the only two countries where polio is still classified as an epidemic. In Pakistan, certain factors including illiteracy and religious misconceptions seriously hamper government-backed vaccination efforts and have been directly associated with a rise in polio cases. This negatively affects the progress made by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
It is important to mention that Pakistan is trying hard to deal with polio. In 2020, the total number of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases stood at 84. This means that with goodinitiatives and seriousness, Pakistan can easily eradicate polio from the country.
