In late January, California’s Attorney General (AG) tweeted about the use of the new Global Privacy Control (GPC), informing California consumers that on certain browsers they can use GPC as a “stop selling my data switch” to exercise their right to opt out of the sale of their personal information (PI) in one step – rather than on an individual site basis. As the GPC is not yet a finalized standard, it remains uncertain as to when the AG’s office will begin enforcing the GPC, but the tweet provides some insight into how the OAG views this issue.

On today’s internet, information is nearly impossible to control. It’s become commonplace for a single website visit to spill over into targeted ads (often for something you’ve already bought) or unexpectedly canny spam emails. It’s assumed that information from your browsing history will be available to target your Instagram ads, and despite nominal commitments to privacy, tech companies have mostly given up trying to stop those data flows.
Privacy groups are hoping that a new standard, called Global Privacy Control, will change that. It’s designed as a global opt out, a general signal that users want as little data collection and sharing as possible. DuckDuckGo is updating its mobile apps and desktop extensions to meet the standards of a new effort called Global Privacy Control (GPC).
GPC is a setting for browsers and devices that signals a preference for privacy to all visited websites. The GPC setting is now turned on by default in DuckDuckGo’s apps and extensions.
