Government of Canada expands work to address economic-based threats to national security

Share this article Share this article OTTAWA, ON, May 27, 2021 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is committed to addressing new and emerging threats to national security, including those posing risks to intellectual property intensive businesses, access to innovative technologies and sensitive research, and any other economic-based threats to the safety and prosperity of Canadians. Public Safety Canada s Economic Security Task Force is leading an interdepartmental policy review examining what, if any, additional measures are needed to ensure Canada s continued ability to respond to the economic-based threats to national security now and in the future. Potential threats include the loss of sensitive goods, technology and intellectual property, the malicious use of sensitive personal information of Canadians, and compromised critical infrastructure, not to mention the economic and financial toll and opportunity costs.

When the U.S. wielded the rules early in the last decade, it cost Canadian producers dearly and was blamed for sharp declines in livestock exports south of the border. Ultimately, it took the World Trade Organization, which ruled the U.S. violated international trade law, and the threat of hefty sanctions for American lawmakers to repeal the regulations in 2015.

CDEMA receives Deployment Package from Global Affairs Canada

Social Share The High Commission of Canada to Barbados and the OECS on May 19, 2021 officially handed over a Deployment Package to CDEMA to support its Response Units. The package, worth over CAD$15,000, was funded through the Targeted Support to CDEMA Project and equips teams with backpacks, hats, insulated water bottles and waterproof mobile phone cases. Executive Director (ag) of CDEMA Elizabeth Riley expressed her appreciation for the ongoing partnership saying, “Canada has been an excellent partner of CDEMA, and this is a statement from my heart…the first multi-year project that I managed at CDEMA was a Canadian Finance Project and it was a game changer in what we were able to bring to the table in pushing the resilience conversation. The flexibility of how the Government of Canada interfaces with us as an implementation agency has really allowed us to do our jobs that much better.”
