Two Montrealers were among those killed in a stampede during a religious festival in northern Israel, prompting an outpouring of grief from the local community.
The incident took place at a Lag BaOmer event in Mount Meron on Friday that was attended by tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews. It left at least 45 people dead and about 150 injured. We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life at Mt. Meron in Israel during what should have been a joyous celebration of Lag BaOmer, said Nikki Holland, president and CEO of the Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA.
