Early in the pandemic, the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt had hundreds of sailors test positive, with one fatality. The outbreak led to the removal of the ship s commander. More recently hundreds of sailors aboard the destroyer Chafee were placed under quarantine in San Diego hotel rooms.
Adm. Karl Schultz was on hand as the Alameda, Calif.-based USCGC Bertholf unloaded 7,500 pounds of cocaine and marijuana seized by several Coast Guard vessels in the eastern Pacific over the first two months of 2021.

IFES is currently recruiting for a Deputy Country Director/Senior Electoral Advisor (DCD/SEA) for its work in Kenya, under an FCDO-funded program entitled Kenya Elections Support Programme (KESP). The programme is expected to build upon electoral reforms previously supported by FCDO in Kenya to contribute to a credible, peaceful and inclusive 2022 general election in Kenya.
PRIMARY FUNCTION/PURPOSE:
The DCD/SEA will provide technical support to key election institutions, in areas such as legal framework reform, strategic and operational planning, communications, voter education, and others. Under the supervision of the Country Director, the DCD/SEA will support all aspects of program implementation, including managing partnerships with relevant government agencies, key stakeholders and donor agencies.

It’s been a year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, ushering in an era of lockdowns, suffering and mass death.
“With 2.6 million people dead and tens of trillions in economic damage, we are living through the worst crisis of our lifetimes,” Dr. Peter Singer of the World Health Organization told the Whig-Standard in an email. “Vaccines are a critical tool for ending the pandemic and also for addressing variants and future pandemics.
