Canada has officially launched an international space program to track illegal fishing.
Illegal fishing is a scourge on countries all across the world, said to represent up to 26 million tonnes (30%) of all fish caught annually – this equates to between $10-23 billion, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

In addition to impacting the livelihoods of fish harvesters, internationally, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing also contributes to habitat destruction, whether it be out on the high seas or closer to the waters of coastal states. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was blindsided by China’s decision to prevent a COVID-19 vaccine candidate from being shipped to Canada, just hours before it was supposed to be sent by plane, and thought the Canadian embassy would quickly resolve the delay, according to internal PMO emails.
The National Research Council (NRC) and CanSino Biologics signed a deal in early May to start clinical trials of CanSino’s COVID vaccine at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University in Halifax. That agreement would have given the Canadian government the right to manufacture its own doses, assuming Health Canada was satisfied with the trial results.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has launched a new program in collaboration with the Department of National Defence, Defence Research and Development Canada’s Centre for Security Science, Global Affairs Canada, and MDA to detect vessels engaging in IUU fishing, also known as “dark vessels”.
The list of people exempt from a mandatory travel quarantine rule is small, but it includes diplomats, minors and people in so-called 'exigent' circumstances.
