The official website for the
Universal Studios Japan theme park announced on Friday that the park will temporarily close from Sunday, April 25 due to the third state of emergency against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Osaka, among other prefectures. The announcement noted that the government is specifically asking theme parks to have no attendees during the state of emergency. The park will reopen once the government lifts the state of emergency.
Universal Studios Japan just opened its new Super
Nintendo World area on March 18. The park had originally planned to open the area in late July 2020, in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but delayed the opening to prevent crowding, as a countermeasure against COVID-19. (The Olympics event itself has been delayed until this year also.) The park then planned to open the area on February 4, but this was again postponed due to the second state of emergency declaration for Osaka and other prefectures.

On March 18, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared at the Super Nintendo World opening at Universal Studios Japan. For the photos, he seems to have briefly removed his mask, which was probably safe. However, in light of the ensuing state of emergency, the photos reflect poorly on the seriousness of the pandemic, especially now it’s been announced the park is temporarily closing.

Due to rising numbers of Covid cases in the Osaka area, Universal Studios Japan has been forced to close again, for an indefinite period.
Universal s most-visited theme park will close starting April 25 and will remain closed until further notice. We sincerely apologize for causing any inconvenience to our guests who were looking forward to visiting us. The closure is in compliance with a state of emergency for Osaka prefecture, where Universal Studios Japan is located.
Universal Studios Japan and Super Nintendo World Temporarily Closing
Universal Studios Japan announced another temporary closure of its park, including Super Nintendo World, effective April 25, 2021. The state of emergency for Osaka prefecture is the stated reason for the shutdown. Nintendo’s foray into the amusement park industry has only been operating for one month since its opening day on March 18, 2021.
Universal Studios Japan posted the announcement on its website on April 23, 2021. The park’s corporate communication office described the temporary closure as “due to the substantial business shutdown request to operate with no spectators which was issued under the state of emergency for Osaka prefecture.” The company apologized for the inconvenience and stated that instructions regarding previously purchased tickets will be available on its website. So far, Universal Studios Japan has not announced a reopening date for the amusement park.
