Gen. Debold Sinas, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said Nuezca used to be a member of the Station Drug Enforcement Unit and as an anti-narcotics operative, he was involved in various police operations amid the aggressive drug war.
“The two homicide cases were drug-related. They conducted raids and there were incidents that the suspects fight back,” said Sinas.
He said the motu-propio investigation of the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) found no substantial evidence against Nuezca and other members of the SDEU, leading to the dismissal of the two cases last year.
Nuezca was re-assigned to the PNP Crime Laboratory based in Parañaque City.

This developed as ACT-CIS partylist Rep. Nina Taduran called on the Philippine National Police to conduct a regular behavioral evaluation of all its members especially those who have pending cases like Police Senior Master Sgt. Joenel Nuezca.
Taduran believes that the investigation of cases of erring policemen shouldn’t stop at the office of the Internal Affairs Service of the PNP. She said that there should be cross-checking to know if the case has been properly evaluated and investigated.

Gen. Debold Sinas, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said that two separate homicide charges were actually two of the five cases that were slapped against Police Senior Master Sgt. Jonel Nuezca since 2014 before the Internal Affairs Service (IAS).
“All of them were dismissed except for a case in 2016 for a less grave offense when he was suspended for 31 days,” said Sinas in a press briefing.
Among those that were dismissed, according to Sinas, were the homicide case that was filed in May, 2019, and another homicide case in December also last year.
The official said the two homicide cases were dismissed due to lack of evidence.
