A bridge or tunnel connecting Northern Ireland to Scotland is impractical but not impossible , a leading bomb disposal expert has said, Former Royal Navy clearance diver Michael Fellows says Beaufort s Dyke, where surplus munitions from the two World Wars and radioactive waste were dumped, is one of many obstacles that could scupper Boris Johnson s plan. It s estimated that Beaufort s Dyke contains over a million tonnes of munitions dumped there by the War Office and its successor the Ministry of Defence up until the mid-1970s. As well as conventional weaponry such as artillery shells, the dyke was also used as a dumping ground for incendiary bombs containing phosphorus, which ignite on contact with air, as well as chemical weapons including mustard gas, tear gas, phosgene, and the nerve agents tabun and sarin.

Commitment on Louth s Narrow Water Bridge project welcomed Reporter:   ); Sinn Féin Councillor and joint Chair of the cross-border Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Antóin Watters has welcomed an update and commitments from the North’s Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon, on the Narrow Water Bridge project as ‘positive and enthusiastic’. Cllr Watters said: “The Narrow Water Bridge project has been stopping and starting for years and was included in the New Decade, New Approach Deal which saw the institutions in the north restored at Stormont. It is now a year on from the signing of that Deal and although the project was way-laid by Brexit and then Covid, I am pleased that we have commitments from Minister Mallon that this is a priority on her work plan and I feel progress is being made.
