Lough Ree Access for All project among finalists for National Lottery Good Causes Awards taking place virtually this Saturday Reporter: newsroom@longfordleader.ie );   ); Lough Ree Access for All in Lanesboro and Ballyleague is among the thirty-six community groups, sports clubs and organisations from all over Ireland who have been announced as finalists in the National Lottery Good Causes Awards.  The National Lottery Good Causes Awards will be broadcast live from the Mansion House in Dublin this Saturday, May 29 from 1pm. The National Lottery Good Causes Awards honour the inspiring work and achievements of thousands of projects, clubs and individuals from all over Ireland who with the help of National Lottery Good Causes funding have had an extraordinary impact on their local communities.

Poacher convicted and fined for assault and Fisheries Act breaches

May 11, 2021 11:28 am A poacher was convicted and fined a total of €2,400 for assault and breaches to the Fisheries Acts in an incident that occurred last year, according to Inland Fisheries Ireland. The man, from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, was convicted by Judge Marian O’Leary at Cork District Court on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 on five charges including assaulting fisheries officers. Officers of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) had observed the man fishing in a prohibited area known as the ‘Flush’ at the face of the ESB Inniscarra Dam on May 23, 2020. The poacher was fined €500 for illegal entry upon the private fishery, €400 for obstructing the fisheries officers, €500 for assault and €300 for not having a Salmon Rod Ordinary Licence.

Image: Fjordstrong The start-up will use the funding to develop its underwater surveying technology that could help conserve marine species. FjordStrong, a spin-out from Queen’s University Belfast, has secured £316,000 in seed funding. The investment round was led by QUBIS, the commercialisation arm of Queen’s University, along with a number of private investors. FjordStrong is a marine biodiversity technology company that has developed an underwater survey system. This system, called Auto-release Baited Underwater Video, is designed to survey high conservation value species and protected marine areas.
