The pandemic did not have a similar effect on deaths related to motor vehicle crashes. As the Star-Banner has previously reported, that number actually went up in Marion, from 96 in 2019 to 110 in 2020. Law officers blamed distracted driving and excessive risk taking, even though traffic volume was lighter during the first months of the pandemic.
