Court cases highlight responsible pet ownership

Date Time Court cases highlight responsible pet ownership Three recent court orders, involving two dog attacks and an incident of animal cruelty, against three Greater Shepparton residents have highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership. The three local residents were each found guilty in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court earlier this year, with each being handed significant penalties as a result of their wrongdoing. The first resident was found guilty, with conviction, to a total of 33 charges relating to multiple incidents of animal cruelty involving numerous animals. The charges included 13 counts of failing to provide sufficient food, drink or shelter and failing to prevent unreasonable pain and suffering. They were also found guilty of four charges of failing to register their animals with Council.

Friendly reminder: Pet registration renewals due 10 April

There are currently 20,360 dogs and cats registered in Maroondah. April is pet registration time and Council is reminding all cat and dog owners to ensure animal registration is renewed by 10 April. Pet owners can register to receive their future animal registration renewal notices by email. Once you register you will no longer receive a paper version of that notice. Victorian legislation (Domestic Animals Act 1994) requires that every cat and dog over the age of three months is microchipped and registered with Council. Mayor of Maroondah, Cr Kylie Spears said dogs and cats that are registered and microchipped had a far greater chance of being reunited with their owner quickly and safely should they get lost or be found wandering.
