Wellington’s fractured city council will take its first official steps on Thursday to fix ongoing dysfunction that some councillors say has become worse despite a recent review.

The dysfunction in the Wellington City Council has gone from bad to worse, multiple councillors say, since the release last month of an independent report that was meant to chart a constructive path forward for the capital’s local authority. The independent report, by former Local Government New Zealand chief executive Peter Winder, recommended sweeping reforms to encourage “collaboration not division” so the council could deal with its many pressing problems, from infrastructure repairs to transport gridlock.

Once again we have come together to commemorate Anzac Day and, following last year’s Covid restrictions, large crowds turned out for the services held throughout Waitaki.
It’s a real honour for me to attend some of those services in my role as mayor and I want to thank all of those who helped organise or attend them, as our community paid their respects to those who have served our country over the years in wars, conflicts and peacetime.
