AN ACTIVIST S DIARY,
Saturday May 01, 2021 - 11:26:00 AM Where I grew up, May 1 was a celebration of spring with leaving surprise baskets of candy on doorsteps and then running away. I didn’t learn about May 1 as International Worker’s Day until years later after I left that little town in Minnesota. May 1 is also the birthday of a friend who caught COVID-19 in January 2021 and is still struggling with what we call “long haulers syndrome.” An attendant for her daughter went partying over New Years and brought it in. I am sharing the story of my friend as the COVID-19 pandemic is not over even as the incidence of new cases in the US is dropping and California is looking good. For some like my friend COVID may never be over. Please do all you can to persuade unvaccinated 16 year olds and older in your circle of friends to get their COVID-19 vaccines and complete the two shot regimen.
Sunday April 11, 2021 - 09:31:00 PM Prior to 1953, Iranians were pro American and pro-British. Scores of bright students ventured abroad to seek advanced degrees in some of the most elite colleges in the UK and US.
I was living in UK at the time and remember the “UK tabloids mocked and denigrated Mosaddeq as the “weeping” PM. All that changed in 1953 when Britain’s super spy agency, MI6 sought the help of the CIA to overthrow the burgeoning democracy of Premier Mohammad Mosaddeq and replaced him with the Shah of Iran. The Shah quickly consolidated power and imposed a blanket of self-censorship with the aid of his dreaded secret police, the Savak. Thousands of activists were jailed or “disappeared.” America’s stooge was finally removed with the return of Ayatollah Khomeini who quickly established a theocracy.
On March 29, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz admitted to
Fox News host Tucker Carlson that he was facing federal charges for underage-dating aka, trafficking a child. But as squeamish as the revelations are, Gaetz critics may be overreaching in their condemnation. While the age of consent in Florida is 18, a 17-year-old is not a child. (Florida actually has a Romeo and Juliette Law that allows 16-year-olds to have sex with someone no older than 23 years. That won t help Gaetz: he s 38.)
The legal age of consent is 16 in most of the US (including Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.) In the Golden State it’s 18.
Sunday April 04, 2021 - 12:52:00 PM The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, the graveyard of empires, is a tragic tale. Sadly, our politicians are not students of history and their actions invariably play to their domestic audience. Following the attack on 9/11, the U.S. military and the C.I.A followed the playbook of previous wars and used overwhelming force to catch and kill their illusive enemy, Osama Bin Laden and his followers. America even pressured our NATO allies to join the fight. Twenty years later the new Biden administration understands there is no easy path forward. The Taliban are convinced they have the upper hand. If America withdraws its forces it will be yet another humiliating defeat for the “great Satan” and red meat for the Republicans. If U.S. forces stay, more Americans and Afghans will surely die.
