Manx Nation Heritage director to leave role after more than a decade

The departing director of Manx National Heritage says ‘putting people first’ has been at the forefront of his work for the last decade. Edmund Southworth, who took on the role in 2009, is retiring later this year after more than ten years in the post. He’s been responsible for looking after iconic landmarks such as the Laxey Wheel and Peel Castle. Mr Southworth reflected on his time in the job with Local Democracy Reporter Chris Cave:

The new chairman of the Liberal Vannin party says plans to ‘obliterate’ coronavirus from the Island are unrealistic. Paul Weatherall, who was elected unopposed to succeed Michael Josem in the position, was responding to comments made by the chief minister. Despite being supportive of reintroducing lockdown for an initial period of three weeks, Mr Weatherall says the virus will ‘always be a risk’. Tough restrictions were implemented on the Isle of Man on 7 January for the first time since the end of the previous lockdown in mid-June. On Saturday, Chief Minister Howard Quayle hinted he would be willing to enforce restrictions for some time to come.
Public backed to beat virus again Three-week circuit breaker in force
Manx residents have been backed to beat Covid-19 for a second time as the Island enters a three-week circuit breaker lockdown.
A recent spike in community cases led to the reintroduction of tough new measures for the first time since mid-June.
The chairman of Braddan Commissioners has called on the public to play their part in eradicating coronavirus.
Voicing his support for a second lockdown, Andrew Jessopp says it s important to act quickly to minimise the spread of the virus. We ve just got to keep pulling together as a community , he said.
Shoppers praised for supporting the high street

The leader of Douglas Council has praised shoppers for doing their business in the high street rather than online. David Christian says people have responded to a plea from the authority to help out retailers who have been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Traders in the capital are said to be ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the number of customers they’ve had through the doors in the build-up to Christmas.
