Alarm bells are going off across Ontario as agriculture and conservation organizations note an alarming increase in Ministerial Zoning Orders being issued by the province’s MMAH minister.
The minister with that discretionary power says the Ford government’s “focus on supporting economic recovery has not wavered,” and it is using the “enhanced MZO” to build more housing, long term care facilities and expand transit authority capacity.

Sudbury s Kingsway Entertainment District planning appeals dismissed
The Local Planning Appeal Tribunal has dismissed appeals against the Kingsway Entertainment District a controversial arena and event centre planned for Sudbury that was supposed to be built this year.

Introduction
Developers and landowners should review new or existing permit
applications that involve conservation authorities consent or
approval, in the wake of new legislative changes that will affect
certain permitting powers and related appeals processes.
On November 5, 2020, the Ontario government introduced a number
of changes to the
Conservation Authorities
Act (the
Act ) that will
significantly impact the role of conservation authorities when it
comes to issuing and appealing permits. These changes were
introduced as Schedule 6 to the omnibus bill titled
Bill
229, Protect, Support and Recover from COVID-19 Act (Budget
Measures), 2020 ( Bill 229 ), which has
recently received Royal Assent.

A petition circulated Thursday was signed by 70 area residents by Friday evening. They also sent a letter to the municipality for the planning advisory board to consider during its virtual public hearing on the matter Dec. 16. Other comments on the applications also will be on the agenda.
