Vanilla farmers decry falling prices

Daily Monitor Monday May 03 2021 Summary Vanilla is harvested twice a year; June -July and December –January. Uganda has some of the best vanilla in the world and this puts it at a competitive advantage with the rest of the world’s producers. Advertisement The falling prices of vanilla have left farmers frustrated, with many afraid that they might not recover investment costs during the harvesting season, which commences next month. The farmers say some buyers have already intimated that the prices may drop further, with a kilogramme of vanilla going for between Shs10,000 and Shs20,000, down from about Sh50,000 10  months ago.

Ugandan Journalist Shot Dead

  A Ugandan journalist working for the state broadcaster has been shot dead in a confrontation with security forces. Robert Kagolo was killed at his late brother s home that was being guarded by the Local Defence Unit (LDU), a civilian paramilitary force. Two LDU officers have been arrested over the incident. The family had requested security from the LDU after the kidnapping and killing of Mr Kagolo s brother Samuel Musiitwa. The journalist was returning to the house on Thursday evening after his brother s burial when he became involved in a confrontation with the officers. It is reported that he had knocked down the gate to the house with his vehicle suspecting he was being followed.

Star FM news editor shot dead by LDU officer April 30, 2021 RIP: Robert Kagolo Star FM news editor and the former president of Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) Robert Kagolo has been shot dead. Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said that Kagolo was killed by a Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel identified as Rashid Mamuli who was guarding the home of Kagolo’s brother at Kasengeje village in Wakiso district on Thursday at around 8:00 pm. LDU personnel were deployed to guard Kagolo’s brother, Samuel Musiitwa, who, on Monday this week reportedly caught redhanded his wife sleeping with another man. Related Stories
