Joe Schember’s re-election bid took a resounding step forward.
The Democrat claimed his party’s nomination for Erie mayor in Tuesday’s municipal primary despite facing two Democratic challengers: businessman and Erie School Board member Tom Spagel and Sydney Zimmermann, a paid canvasser for the social justice organization Erie County United.
With no Republican on the ballot for the Nov. 2 municipal election, Schember, 70, is all but certain to win a second four-year term, barring a successful run from an independent, write-in or third-party candidate.
A former member of Erie City Council and retired PNC Bank vice-president, Schember was first elected in 2017.
The Cornwall-Lebanon school board at its May 10 meeting unveiled its 2021-22 budget that comes with a proposed 2.9% property tax hike. The meeting was conducted in person inside of Cedar Crest High Schoolâs large-group instruction room, with a virtual option.
The proposed $87.6 million budget would be balanced with a real estate tax hike that would raise the millage to 16.09.
With the proposed recommendation, the median homeowner, with an assessed value of $161,100, would pay an additional $73 next school year for a total real estate tax bill of $2,592.
The final tax levy is yet to be determined. The board expects to vote on the proposed final budget May 17.
Two years ago, Jasmine Flores narrowly missed claiming an Erie City Council seat.
Flores finished fourth in the May 2019 Democratic City Council primary just behind Michael Keys, who went on to win a council seat that November.
She s hoping for an even more successful run this time.
Flores, 28, is among eight Democrats and two Republicans in the City Council race. Four of council s seven seats are on the ballot for the May 18 municipal primary.
All seven council seats are currently held by Democrats.
Along with fellow Democrats Elspeth Kate Koehle and Kendrick Tate, Flores is running as a slate connected to the citizen advocacy and social justice group Erie County United.

The Easton Area School Board agreed not to levy real estate taxes on 13 Easton properties next year and gradually collect taxes until they finally collect full taxes on the properties in 10 years.
This isn’t some “tax scam” but a well-reasoned decision to spur redevelopment in the city, according to Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr.
“In the suburbs you grow by building out. In the city you grow by rebuilding and adaptive reuse of existing structures,” Panto told the school board Tuesday. You can hear his comments on the meeting video on YouTube.
