Ten More In Congress Join As Co-Sponsors Of Local Radio Freedom Act

Ten more members of CONGRESS have joined as co-sponsors of the 2021 version of the Local Radio Freedom Act, the bill that opposes any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge on local broadcast radio stations. The bill now has 87 co-sponsors in the HOUSE and eight in the SENATE.
Signing on to co-sponsor the bill were: Reps. BRIAN BABIN (R-TX-36); JEFF FORTENBERRY (R-NE); SCOTT FRANKLIN (R-FL); JIM HAGEDORN (R-MN); TREY HOLLINGSWORTH (R-IN); JIM JORDAN (R-OH); MARCY KAPTUR (D-OH); DONALD PAYNE, JR. (D-NJ); GREG PENCE (R-IN); and ELISE STEFANIK (R-NY). Reps. KATHY CASTOR (D-FL) and STEVE WOMACK (R-AR) are the original sponsors in the HOUSE, and Sens. JOHN BARRASSO (R-WY) and MARTIN HEINRICH (D-NM) are the original SENATE sponsors.

Music Modernization Act of 2018 (MMA). The ball got rolling in February 2021 when digital service providers (DSPs) began reporting their streaming and download usage numbers for the previous month to the Mechanical Licensing Collective.
The organization’s first calculation of royalties, which
totaled more than $53 million, includes royalties distributed to MLC creator members and rights holders, funds that have been matched to the appropriate musical work but remained unclaimed, and unmatched money. Senators Heinrich, Barrasso And Reps. Castor, Womack Reintroduce Bipartisan, Bicameral Local Radio Freedom Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) reintroduced the bipartisan Local Radio Freedom Act, a resolution declaring that Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charges that create economic hardships for locally-owned radio stations. U.S. Representatives Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) and Steve Womack (R-Ark.) introduced a companion in the U.S. House of Representatives with 76 cosponsors.
