The 83-year-old Monticello resident was the first patient at IU Health Arnett Hospital to receive a valve replacement from new technology the hospital recently acquired, a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) program. His surgery took place a little over a month ago, Feb. 9.
He received the surgery “just in time,” as Evans said as his heart “was in bad shape.”
“They did one of the best jobs and I’d recommend it to anyone,” he said.
TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat patients with aortic stenosis, or a narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve that can lead to symptoms like shortness of breath, lightheadedness, fatigue or a shortened lifespan, according to the hospital.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) Sixteen nurses from Riley Children’s Health are being deployed to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette to help with the COVID-19 pandemic relief.
According to Kayla Meeks, a nurse at the Riley Hospital for Children, nurses at Arnett Hospital are handling a lot more patients than usual, so the help is much needed.
“They’ve just been willing to change and that’s not what they’re used to,” said Meeks.
“They’re obviously not used to taking that many patients, but we have helped, so it’s just a different kind of mindset of nursing and they’ve just been incredible,” said Meeks, “They’ve just been grateful for us to be there.”
