USDA releases study on hurdles to healthy eating for SNAP recipients

States Ending Their Pandemic Emergency Declarations Surrender Extra Food Stamp Money

Harvest Public Media Families have come to rely on expanded food stamp payments during the pandemic. In some states, that extra help is in jeopardy. Federal COVID-19 relief boosted SNAP payments. But some states have ended their disaster declarations to speed up the economic recovery even as advocates warn that some people will go hungry. As states like Kansas and Oklahoma let their emergency declarations run out, they effectively take a pass on extra federal help with food stamps. Nearly one in five families struggled to afford food at the height of the pandemic. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) allotments were maxed out to reduce food insecurity.

Extension of emergency SNAP benefits will continue in June 2021 | New Mexico Human Services Department

Extension of emergency SNAP benefits for June 2021 SANTA FE – New Mexico households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits will receive the maximum amount for their household size for the month of June as the state continues its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced the New Mexico Human Services Department. “HSD is committed to providing these much-needed emergency benefits to New Mexicans,” said Karmela Martinez, director of the Income Support Division which administers the SNAP program, formally known as food stamps. “These benefits will continue to help many families keep food on the table.” The emergency assistance will increase a household’s monthly benefit up to the maximum food benefit amount for their household size (see table below). SNAP recipients do not have to take any action to receive these additional food benefits as they will be placed directly on their EBT cards.
