Dr. Mary McSweeney, the school’s assistant dean, calls it the ‘Fauci Effect’ or ‘Pothof Effect,’ named after Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert; and Dr. Jeff Pothof, UW Health’s Chief Quality Officer. “After [the September 11th attacks] there was a huge increase in the number of young people going into the military,” Dr. McSweeney said. “And now, we see a physician like Fauci nationally, and Pothof locally, who are inspiring the next generation of young people to come and be part of the solution.”
