“The bargaining teams for both Vale and USW Local 6500 did return to the table Monday with the assistance of a third-party facilitator,” said Danica Pagnutti, corporate affairs specialist with Vale.

“The intent of these discussions is for both parties to seek a path forward that will help in ending the current dispute.”
Pagnutti said the talks are expected to continue throughout the week, but Vale will not be commenting on the nature of the discussions out of respect for the process.

Three-month nickel on the London Metal Exchange rose as much as 2.3 per cent to hit its highest since Feb. 25 of $19,205 a tonne, or almost US$8.60 a pound.

Prices for nickel have remained strong in recent months, no doubt helped a strike by 2,4000 production and maintenance workers at Valeâs operations in Sudbury.
The strike began June 1 and members of Steelworkers Local 6500 have twice rejected the companyâs contract offers, saying they contained concessions they were not willing to accept.Â

With a strike by Vale workers now entering its seventh week, the company and union have agreed to bring in an outside party to help them find common ground.
