CAIRO Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdel Aty, warned July 2 European countries against illegal immigration should the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) be completed.
Speaking at a conference organized by the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety, Abdel Aty said his country is one of the driest countries in the world a situation that may be exacerbated if Ethiopia continues to insist on filling the GERD. He continued that the lack of water could cause the youth to make illegal travels to Europe, and many of them could end up joining terrorist groups, according to the ministry’s statement.

CAIRO: Egypt and Sudan have reacted angrily after being told by Ethiopia that it has resumed filling the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) for the second year.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Monday met with his Sudanese counterpart, Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, in New York, with both ministers later issuing a statement describing the Nile dam’s second-phase filling as a “dangerous escalation.”
Ethiopia’s announcement raises tensions ahead of a July 8 UN Security Council session on the dam dispute being held at the request of Cairo and Khartoum.

Ethiopia has begun filling the reservoir behind its giant hydropower dam, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), for a second year, in contravention of the wishes of its neighbours.
Egypt has informed Ethiopia of its categorical rejection of the measure, which it regards as a threat to regional stability, Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Aty said in a statement.
Ethiopia says the dam on its Blue Nile is crucial to its economic development and providing power to its population.
Egypt views the dam as a grave threat to its Nile water supplies, on which it is almost entirely dependent.
