This year, Eid al-Fitr, the Islamic holiday also known as the feast of breaking the fast signifying the end of Ramadan, was celebrated on a somber note in the United Arab Emirates. During Eid prayers in Abu Dhabi, Muslims were reminded of the deadly violence taking place three flight hours away as Hamas and Israel fired at each other in the worst bout of fighting between the longtime foes since the 2014 Gaza War.
The mood has shifted since the United Arab Emirates led the way in the September 2020 signing of the historic normalization agreement with Israel known as the Abraham Accords, brokered by the Trump administration, where the UAE established diplomatic relations with Israel. Other nations Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan followed. Of late, there has been talk of more open relations with Saudi Arabia, the ultimate prize in the deal.

On Saturday, Republican lawmakers in Texas unveiled the final conference version of their election reform bill which contains all of the previous controversial provisions banning drive-through voting, severely curtailing Sunday voting, and making it harder for disabled people to vote by mail, and adds in new provisions like requiring voter purges if county registrations and population data don t match, and allowing judges to toss out elections without proving if voter fraud decided the outcome.
The bill would need to be re-approved by the state House and Senate by Sunday evening, when the legislative session concludes, putting pressure on Republicans to move the bill forward with little time for the public to review the final text.

Egypt has reportedly invited Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Hamas to Cairo for a summit to discuss a long-term Israel-Gaza ceasefire following an Egyptian-brokered truce that recently ended an 11-day military flareup between Israel and Gaza’s rulers, Palestinian terror group Hamas.
The goal of the summit would be to hammer out an agreement on the reconstruction of Gaza as well as a ceasefire deal that would hold long-term and discuss the return of Israeli civilians and the bodies of two IDF soldiers held captive for nearly seven years, Israel’s Kan broadcaster reported (Hebrew) on Wednesday.
