CAIRO/ BEIRUT - Arab diplomatic sources linked the visit of Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri to Cairo and his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday to Egypt s ongoing coordination with France and the US to push for the formation of a government in Lebanon.
Hariri’s visit to Cairo coincided with efforts made by US Ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea to expedite the formation of the cabinet. On Wednesday, Shea visited Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al-Rai in Bkerke near Beirut to impress upon him the need to form a Lebanese government as soon as possible.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has conditioned a planned visit to Cairo by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on the latter expressing his support for a two-state solution or making an alternative gesture toward the Palestinians, the Israeli news site Walla reported on Wednesday. The trip has been on the agenda for months. Following the disbanding of the Israeli parliament and scheduling of the fourth round of elections in under two years – to be held March 23 – efforts to facilitate the visit were suspended, but they were recently renewed, Walla reports.
Both sides see such a visit as beneficial. Netanyahu expects the visit to boost his re-election campaign and the Egyptian government hopes an official Israeli visit will set its relations with US President Joe Biden on a positive path. The Egyptians also hope to reposition themselves as central to Israeli-Palestinian relations.
Cairo, Feb 3 : Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi highlighted the need of reaching a binding agreement among all parties over the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the state-run Nile TV reported.
“The Nile River is a source of cooperation and development,” said Sisi during a joint press conference with visiting President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Felix Tshisekedi, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.
For his part, Tshisekedi said he will work hard during his tenure as the chair of the African Union to address the GERD issue through dialogue among Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to avoid escalation and enhance peaceful coexistence.
