Rome: Two prominent Italian intellectuals announced they were returning their Legion of Honour awards to France to protest that Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi was given the prize despite his government s human rights abuses.
Corrado Augias, a long-time journalist for
La Repubblica daily and one-time European Parliamentarian for Italyâs centre-left, returned his prize to the French embassy on Monday, Rome time. Giovanna Melandri, a former Italian culture minister and the president of Rome s Maxxi contemporary art museum, announced she would follow suit.

CAIRO The Egyptian government is seeking to breathe new life into the historical downtown area of Khedivial Cairo. In coordination with the Ministries of Tourism and Antiquities, the National Organization for Urban Harmony and a number of Egyptian state institutions, Cairo governorate started painting the facades of buildings and shops in the area in one unified color. This comes in the wake of the completion of the development works at the buildings and stores in Tahrir Square.

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Ghazouani discussed on Sunday, joint cooperation in combating terrorism and the repercussions of the crisis in Libya.
Egyptian Presidential spokesman Bassam Rady disclosed this in a statement.
Rady said both leaders also discussed ways to enhance joint military and security cooperation as well as counter-terrorism efforts in Africa’s Sahel area, during a phone conversation.
The discussions, according to the spokesperson, also focused on economic cooperation, trade exchange, and ways to increase mutual investment.
The two presidents also exchanged views on the Libyan crisis, the spokesman said, adding that they stressed the need to enhance coordination on the situation in Libya.

ROME A prominent Italian journalist has returned his Legion of Honor to the French Embassy to protest the awarding of the prize to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi during his protest-marred visit to Paris last week.
