Photo essay: Arab uprisings began with quest for freedom

Credit: Share Dec. 17 is a historic day on the minds of many people in Tunisia, elsewhere in North Africa and the Middle East and around the world. That s because exactly 10 years ago, a single event in Tunisia triggered a series of historic revolutions across the region. A street vendor selling fruit was fed up with the system. In an act of protest that later inspired millions, he lit himself on fire. After Mohamed Bouazizi’s self-immolation, the Arab uprisings began in several countries that had only known one ruler for decades. People began to rise up and demand change. Protests spread to countries that had never seen anything like this, from Tunisia and Egypt to Syria, Libya and Yemen. People poured into the streets, shouting words that became slogans of their hopes and dreams.

Mann, a lawyer and activist who worked on landmark First Amendment cases, led Major American Jewish Organizations and became an early and outspoken advocate for a two-state solution in the Middle East, died Dec. 12 at a hospital in Philadelphia. He was 92. The cause was covid-19, said his daughter Julie Mann. He had been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus that can cause the illness about two weeks earlier, she said. The son of Jewish immigrants from Czechoslovakia, Mann co-founded a law firm in Philadelphia, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation while taking pro bono cases through the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Jewish Congress. It happened during a clash that became iconic among Egypt’s “revolutionaries,” when protesters and police battled on a bridge over the Nile in Cairo for hours, ending with the police scattering.
