A Decade After the Arab Spring, Platforms Have Turned Their Backs on Critical Voices in the Middle East and North Africa

Many in the U.S. have spent 2020 debating the problems of content moderation on social media platforms, misinformation and disinformation, and the perceived censorship of political views. But globally, this issue has been in the spotlight for a decade.  This year is the tenth anniversary of what became known as the  Arab Spring , in which activists and citizens across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) used social media to document the conditions in which they lived, to push for political change and social justice, and to draw the world s attention to their movement. For many, it was the first time they had seen how the Internet could have a role to play in pushing for human rights across the world. Emerging social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube all basked in the reflected glory of press coverage that centered their part in the protests: often to the exclusion of those who were actually on the streets. The years after the uprisings failed to live up

No matter what else he claims, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is a tyrant

December 17, 2020 at 10:32 am Egypt s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi told journalists during a press conference with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in Paris that, It is never appropriate for us to be described by you as a tyrant. He is wrong; it is entirely appropriate. Nevertheless, Sisi appeared to be angry at the journalists questions about the horrific human rights situation in Egypt and the arrest of officials from the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR). The three members of the EIPR were released after international pressure. Sisi told Le Figaro that they had been arrested for not having a licence to work in Egypt. However, he did not answer our questions about the charges of terrorism, withholding funds and belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, which the Egyptian Attorney General made against them during the investigations.

10 years after the Arab uprisings, Egypt at lowest point for human rights

But by April 2011, he remembers thinking that the different revolutionary factions were struggling to work together.  “We were successful in creating a political vacuum,” Yaacoub said. “The only people that were around to offer . a viable option or an alternative were the Muslim Brotherhood and their affiliates. They were prepared and ready.” The Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi was elected president. That was something the Egyptian military would not let stand. Yaacoub said by June 2013, he realized the military was going to win the power struggle.   “I remember writing on Twitter multiple times then, like, ‘Folks, this is no longer our fight. This is completely out of our hands. Other people are going to take over now, unfortunately,’” he said.
