The Haryana government Thursday transferred Ambala Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kalia, two days after a group of protesting farmers showed black flags to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and tried to block his convoy during his visit to the district.
The real issue being subsumed in the electoral politics is the creation of a new and unique layer of elected representatives a junior MLA or a senior Panch, depending on how one looks at it. What does this mean not only for the politics of Kashmir, but also for the institutional structure of Indian parliamentary democracy wherein citizens directly elect representatives to only three tiers of governance provided for in the Constitution Parliament, legislative assemblies and the panchayats/ULBs? Unlike anywhere else in the country, another governance layer the DDC is being directly elected in J&K. These are not even statutory bodies, having been created by amending the J&K Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 through executive fiat. By electing 14 members each to 20 DDCs, the existing architecture of legislative democracy in J&K has been redesigned.

Well-oiled fund collection system, donations in kind keep protest afloat
The farmers’ organisations say that their main donors are none other their own activists, farmers, adding that they have developed systematic methods to collect these funds where they record collections in the books in a transparent manner. Updated: December 24, 2020 6:39:21 pm

The ongoing farmers’ agitation has also brought into focus the farm outfits for their funding and resource management. While several have been picked upon for their source of funding, the farmer outfits insist that their funding system is well-oiled and has been in place for years – the reason why they have been able to manage this protest seamlessly.
