Tracing back a ghostly particle to a shredded star, scientists have uncovered a gigantic cosmic particle accelerator. The subatomic particle, called a neutrino, was hurled towards Earth after the doomed star came too close to the supermassive black hole at the centre of its home galaxy and was ripped apart by the black hole s colossal gravity. It is the first particle that can be traced back to such a tidal disruption event (TDE) and provides evidence that these little understood cosmic catastrophes can be powerful natural particle accelerators, as the team led by DESY scientist Robert Stein reports in the journal

Fewer researchers and support staff traveled to Antarctica in 2020 to reduce the risk of introducing the virus to the continent. One of the few science teams that did go is working on the long-term study of Weddell seals in McMurdo Sound. We re trying to understand how things mothers do for their offspring might help those pups do better or do worse later in life, said Jay Rotella, an ecologist at Montana State University and principal investigator on the project.

Defined by the distance from another airport, the world’s most remote airfield is Mataveri International Airport – also known as Isla de Pascua Airport (IPC). It is located in Hanga Roa, the main town and capital of Rapa Nui, or Easter Island in eastern Polynesia. The closest other airport is Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) in Santiago, Chile, and is 3,759 km away.
