As New York City residents prepare to vote in the mayoral primary elections next month, foreign policy may play an outsize role in the candidates they choose. Though the mayor’s only role is to govern the five boroughs, some in the city’s Jewish and Muslim communities are fiercely reviewing how candidates respond to the current flare-up between Israel and Gaza.
Candidate Andrew Yang, a tech entrepreneur and early frontrunner in the race, bore the brunt of the recent tension. Crime is up. Prices are up. Border crossings in the southwest are up. Unemployment is still up. Our national debt is up. Gas is hard to find. Civil unrest surrounds us. And the Middle East is in turmoil. Sounds a lot like the â70s to me.
Last night, my husband, Jimmy, went to fill up my car with gas. He did this because our area of Atlanta has recently experienced higher-than-normal crime. According to the Atlanta Police Departmentâs May 1 crime report for our zone, auto theft is up 50%, robbery up 54%, aggravated assault up 57% and auto larceny up 57%. Talk about a crime wave.
