DVIDS - News - Italian F-35s train at Aviano, strengthening partnerships

14 For the first time ever, two Italian air force F-35 Lightning IIs, assigned to the 32nd Wing, Amendola Air Base, Italy, landed at Aviano Air Base, Italy, May 20-21, in support of Astral Knight 2021. AK21 is an integrated air and missile defense exercise focused on defending key terrain, involving service members from Albania, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Slovenia and the United States. This year ITAF F-35 pilots, who also participated in Astral Knight 2019, played the role of “allies” during AK21. “I was flying in AK19 with the [ITAF] squadron and a [U.S. F-35s] with my former students over the Adriatic Sea,” said ‘Decker,’ ITAF 13th Squadron commander. “I felt at home in a perfect comfort zone, sharing plans is a strength for conducting operations.”

Military handlers reunited with their K-9 partners after being separated during service

In fact, they re being rekindled thanks to the efforts of American Humane – a nonprofit dedicated to the safety and well-being of animals. Since 2014, the nonprofit has been working to ensure that military handlers, like Steponovich and Alfson, are reunited with their canine companions once the dogs are officially retired.  To make that happen, the organization tracks down the latest handler for adoption and then covers the cost to bring the dog to its new and rightful owner. American Humane also covers the cost of veterinary care throughout the rest of the dog s life. 

EUCOM leadership visits Aviano > Nellis Air Force Base > News

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – Chief Master Sgt. Phillip Easton, U.S. European Command senior enlisted leader, visited Aviano Air Base, Italy, May 12-13, 2021. Easton briefed Airmen from the 31st Fighter Wing on command priorities and provided leadership guidance. As the senior enlisted leader of EUCOM, he was able to provide a perspective on the current state of affairs for enlisted service members serving in Europe explaining EUCOM’s command structure, priorities and partnerships while passing along leadership philosophies he gained from his 30 years of leadership. During his visit, Easton visited multiple locations to get an inside-look at what the 31st FW’s operations. These locations included the Tech. Sgt. Adam K. Ginett Airman Leadership School (ALS) auditorium, a bomb build with the 31st Maintenance Group (MXG), and the 56th Rescue Squadron for a leadership brief with first sergeants.
