The last known member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen from Omaha has died. Robert Holts was 96 years-old when he died Friday and had spent his final years at an assisted living center in Bellevue. It’s been more than 70 years since Holts ended his military service, but he’ll forever be a part of a group of World War II pilots and support personnel who broke color barriers in the 1940’s.
The Trailblazing Life of MSU’s First African American Faculty Member
David W.D. Dickson’s trailblazing career, spanning more than 40 years and five academic institutions, began at Michigan State University in the Department of English in 1948 when he became the university’s first African American faculty member and, a few years later, the first to be awarded MSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award. He also went on to become the first African American to lead a college or university in the state of New Jersey. However, the trajectory of his academic accomplishments first began in his childhood home.

He built his first telescope at the age of 10, and by age 25, George Carruthers earned a Ph.D. in aeronautical and astronautical engineering.
Upon graduating from the University of Illinois, Carruthers started work at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.
His telescope and image converter identified molecular hydrogen in space, and his ultraviolet spectrograph was used by the Apollo 16 crew in their flight to the moon.

He married Jane Wyman in 1940, and had children Maureen, Christine (died a day old) and Michael (adopted).
Reagan was elected President of the Screen Actors Guild.
His second marriage was to Nancy Davis in 1952, and they had children Patti and Ron.
He switched from Democrat to Republican, and was elected Governor of California, 1967-1975.
When he began running for President, some conservatives did not support him because he was the first Presidential candidate who had been divorced.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected the 40th U.S. President, being one of the oldest elected to that office.
He was 69 years old when elected, and 69 days after his inauguration, he survived an assassination attempt.
