Hobart diver improvises after COVID-19 closed pools

Ethan Ferba had big plans for the offseason. The Hobart diver got a taste of competing against the best when he finished 26th at the IHSAA state swimming and diving competition last February in Indianapolis. When Ferba returned to Northwest Indiana, he sat down with Hobart diving coach Katharine Rinas and the two put together a summer workout plan that would allow the then-sophomore to take his diving to the next level. Then COVID-19 hit and pools around the Region shutdown, including Hobart’s sparkling new swim facility. “When everything with COVID happened, it was bad,” Ferba said. “We had a whole summer planned out for workouts. It made all those plans go away.”

Brother of actor Paul Newman supported Santa Fe Opera

Arthur Newman liked to tell his friends he was the luckiest guy in the world. He did everything he wanted to do and got to meet everyone he wanted to meet in his various roles as a film executive, businessman, local politician and philanthropist. “It seemed to me it wasn’t just luck that he had,” friend and neighbor Fred Knight said of Newman, who died Dec. 7 of complications from sepsis in California. “He loved people,” Knight said. “He had a lust for life. He was happy and was enthusiastic about everything he did, and he did a lot.” Newman, 96, had a home in Santa Fe with his wife Patty for 13 years. They supported a number of local organizations including the Santa Fe Opera, New Mexico School for the Arts and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.

But my grandfather miraculously survived a U.S. Army Air Corps bomber crash during World War II, so this story can be written. He never spoke about the details, but news reports say the accident happened the night of August 8, 1943 during a routine training flight. My grandfather’s aircraft plowed into the harsh desert 120 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah. Crash-landing into what is now Interstate 80 then skidding off the road onto nearby Western Pacific railroad tracks. Minutes later the bomber was slammed by a freight train resulting in a 26-car pile-up and what the Associated Press called a “dizzy pyramid of destruction.”
