The alleged cheating at the Army s storied training ground for officers, first reported by USA Today, involves a calculus exam administered remotely in May when the campus was closed and the cadets were at home, Lt. Col. Chris Hooper, an academy spokesman, told Military.com by phone Monday night.

Share This: Photo of West Point Class of 2018 graduation: DVIDs   The U.S. Military Academy at West Point has been rocked with its worst cheating scandal since 1976 as 73 cadets are accused of breaking the honor code.  The cadets were accused of cheating on a calculus exam back in May when the service academy switched to virtual classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the cadets involved, 72 were first-year or “plebe” cadets and one was a sophomore.  West Point, which is about 60 miles north of New York City along the Hudson River, is the oldest of the country’s five military service academies. Upon graduation, cadets become officers in the Army. They are expected to embrace the values of Duty, Honor, Country, and Professional Excellence.

By COREY DICKSTEIN | STARS AND STRIPES Published: December 22, 2020 WASHINGTON The U.S. Military Academy at West Point accused more than 70 underclassmen of cheating on a math final exam in the spring while the students were taking online courses because of the coronavirus pandemic, officials at the New York institution said Tuesday. West Point officials said 72 plebes the academy’s term for freshmen and one second-year cadet were accused of cheating on a calculus final in May when instructors found “irregularities in the mathematical work submitted by cadets” during the grading process. Academy officials said 59 of the accused cadets admitted to cheating on the test. There are about 1,200 cadets in each underclassmen class.
