Why the U S Military Gave Up On the Bullpup-Style Rifle

Why the U.S. Military Gave Up On the Bullpup-Style Rifle Meet the Model 45A, a .30 caliber bullpup that was essentially a hybrid battle rifle/light machine gun.   Here s What You Need to Remember: Unlike modern bullpups, which are compact weapons, the Model45A was actually a long gun in every sense of the word as it featured a particularly long barrel. As part of the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW), which will replace both the M4 Carbine and M249 SAW, one option is a rifle that features a “bullpup” configuration from General Dynamics. This layout places the magazine in the stock behind the pistol group which reduces the length of the weapon but could require some additional training for soldiers used to the legacy systems.

Oregon s Military and Naval Aviation Pioneers, Frank W Wright and Louis T Barin, Jr > Nellis Air Force Base > News

By Lt Col Terrence G. Popravak, Jr., USAF (Retired), 142nd Wing / History Office / Published April 15, 2021 Frank W. Wright’s fighter plane in RAF 209 Squadron during World War I was the famous Sopwith Camel. The British Sopwith F.1 Camel shot down more enemy aircraft than any other Allied World War I fighter. Best characterized by its unmatched maneuverability, the Camel was difficult to defeat in a dogfight. Tricky handling characteristics, however, made the Camel a dangerous aircraft to fly. The example pictured here on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force was built by USAF personnel in 1974 from original factory drawings. (USAF photo)

How America s Aviation Industry Got Its Start Transporting Mail

How America s Aviation Industry Got Its Start Transporting Mail Before carrying passengers, America’s most iconic airlines hauled the mail. It was one of the riskiest jobs around. Author: PhotoQuest/Getty Images Before carrying passengers, America’s most iconic airlines hauled the mail. It was one of the riskiest jobs around. The U.S. aviation industry got its start in the early 20 th century not by transporting people, but by moving America’s mail. At first, airmail pilots flew in flimsy open-cockpit planes through every kind of weather an experience that ranged from frequently harrowing to sometimes fatal. As routes expanded, airports proliferated and safer, more reliable aircraft were developed, the commercial air travel industry emerged, initially by piggybacking on airmail flights. The earliest passengers unceremoniously used mail bags for seats.
