Medals Awarded Postumously to Woman who Served in WWII

Medals Awarded Postumously to Woman who Served in WWII By Rob Sussman Mar 13, 2021 8:42 AM DE PERE, WI (WLUK) Congressman Mike Gallagher posthumously awarded medals to the family of a woman who served in World War II. The family of Mary Benham received seven medals for her service. Benham was in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, played a critical role in maintaining the supply of operating tents and was in charge of surgical teams. Gallagher says it’s important to recognize their accomplishments. “It’s not just people that were in infantry units that got some of our highest decorations for valor, and bravery, there’s remarkable stories,” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R) 8th District said. “Women, in uniform, saving lives, sacrificing their lives, some of the most incredible Marines that I knew, or served with were female Marines.”
