TOKYO At least two more U.S. military bases in Japan are administering the Moderna vaccine to essential workers, including teachers, bringing them another step closer to getting their installations fully inoculated. Yokota and Misawa air bases are vaccinating teachers and school support staff, commissary workers and other individuals in phase 1b “critical and essential support personnel” of a three-phase Defense Department plan to administer the vaccine, base spokesmen told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday.

An individual at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa tested positive for COVID-19, the coronavirus respiratory disease, while in mandatory quarantine following recent travel outside Japan, according to a Facebook post. The base last reported three new patients on Saturday and reported 34 individuals infected with the coronavirus in January.

TOKYO – The number of new coronavirus infections in Japan’s capital rose by more than 100 Wednesday but remained below 1,000 for a sixth straight day. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government said 676 people tested positive for COVID-19, the coronavirus respiratory disease, according to public broadcaster NHK. Mid-week numbers typically climb as more test results become available. Japan reported 2,108 new cases on Tuesday, down from 2,766 the day before and the pandemic peak of 7,855 new infections on one day in early January.
Mayor opposed to U.S. military drill site on Japan island wins re-election
A local mayor in southwestern Japan, who is opposed to having an island his city oversees become a site for U.S. military drills, won re-election on Sunday.
Shunsuke Yaita, the 67-year-old incumbent for Nishinoomote, Kagoshima Prefecture, beat Kiyonobu Fukui, who was backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. His victory could impact the central government s plan to allow the uninhibited Mage Island to be used for U.S. military plane takeoff and landing exercises.
