Gen. Paul LaCamera is expected to take office as the new commander of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) around next month if his confirmation process goes smoothly, sources said Thursday.
LaCamera, who currently serves as Army Pacific Commander, was nominated to succeed Gen. Robert Abrams to lead the 28,500-strong USFK, and his nomination was referred to the Senate Armed Services Committee late last month for a confirmation hearing, according to the sources.

The United States is making good on its pledge to support Afghanistan s security forces with military force even as U.S. and coalition troops continue to leave the country.
A U.S. official confirmed to VOA late Wednesday that U.S. forces were actively carrying out airstrikes against Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan s Helmand province, where fierce fighting has raged for days.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, declined to share additional details, citing the need for operational security.
The Pentagon also declined to offer specifics, though a spokesman said that there s still quite a bit of robust capability at the disposal of U.S. commanders on the ground.

China’s high focus on and investment in emerging and disruptive technology research and acquisition will “very likely” present the “greatest threat to US technology superiority”, US Army Lieutenant General Scott Berrier, the director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), said on 29 April.
In a written statement to the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services, the DIA chief indicated that China has already reached the level of “peer or near-peer” competitor to the United States in many research areas and aspires to be the world leader in these technologies by 2030–35.
