US to probe tax record leak of ultra-wealthy Reuters, WASHINGTON The US Department of the Treasury has asked law enforcement authorities to investigate the disclosure of tax records cited in a media report that showed that some of the US’ richest people paid little to no income taxes, US officials said on Tuesday. US media outlet ProPublica said that it obtained “a vast trove of US Internal Revenue Service [IRS] data on the tax returns of thousands of the nation’s wealthiest people, covering more than 15 years.” The data indicated that billionaires including Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla Inc founder Elon Musk paid no federal income taxes during some years.

Estimated tax is the method used to pay tax on income that isn t subject to withholding, including income from self-employment, interest, dividends, rent, gains from the sale of assets, prizes, and awards. Taxpayers may also have to pay estimated tax if the amount of income tax withheld from a salary, pension, or from other income isn t sufficient.
