President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a phone call Wednesday that the United States wants to see “a significant deescalation today” in the ongoing violence between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
But the Israeli leader said after his call with Biden that he is determined to continue this operation until its objective is achieved laying bare an apparent distance between the two allies on a timeline to bring about a close to the fighting in the region.

NEW LONDON, Conn. – President Joe Biden challenged the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s graduating class on Wednesday to “go out and be the future” in a rapidly changing world.
“We need you badly – that’s not hyperbole,” he said. “You’re ready.”
Biden’s address to the 240 men and women in the academy’s graduating class marked his first commencement address as commander in chief.
As a bright morning sun beamed down, Biden saluted as he began to walk through the cordon of cadets that stretched across nearly half of Cadet Memorial Field to get to the outdoor stage. Soon after Biden took his place on the unshaded stage, cannons were fired 21 times.

President Biden snapped at graduates who declined to clap during his commencement address at the 2021 U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut on Wednesday.
Mr. Biden was talking about the importance of the Coast Guard in times of war when one of his lines fell flat among the graduates.
“I can only assume that you will enjoy educating your family about how the Coast Guard is ‘the hard nucleus around the Navy forms in times of war,’” he said.
“You’re a really dull class,” he added, resting his elbows on the podium. “I mean, come on, man. Is the sun getting to you? I would think you’d have an opportunity when I said that about the Navy, you’d clap.”
