Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas W. Harker wrapped up a multi-state trip across the East Coast April 7 where he visited industrial construction and maintenance locations to view current work, tour facilities and discuss industrial base economic wellness and workforce health. The secretary’s East Coast trip included visits to institutions in the Northeast region, reaffirming partnerships with long-standing contributors to the development of the maritime services, as well as the education and development of future naval leaders. He also visited private and public shipyards, ships and commands in the Norfolk and New England-areas, and Marine Corps commands in Virginia and South Carolina, including Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

ACE senior commits to college for swimming for the U S Coast Guard

MACON, Georgia(41NBC/WMGT) Many students go to college on a football or soccer scholarship. But that’s not the case for Senior Charles Gaines. He received a full ride scholarship to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for swimming and diving. Gaines says, he got into swimming because of his mom, who is also his number one supporter. Aside from receiving a full-ride, he is also the first African-American to commit to a college in the sport of swimming, in all of Middle Georgia. When asked about what he wishes to major in and accomplish, he says his goal is to major in Business Management. With his business degree he hopes to open up a business in swimming.

Volunteers sought for VA program  Montana VA Health Care System is looking for some special volunteers to be part of a unique program – No Veteran Dies Alone. No Veteran Dies Alone is a program that provides a reassuring presence of a compassionate companion to Veterans who would otherwise be alone at the end of their life. “Dying is a sacred journey, and to witness and ease this transition is sacred work,” said Jessica Helms, (RN) the Clinical Care Coordinator – Inpatient Nursing/Emergency Department at MTVAHCS. “While the impact is significant, the qualifications are few. It simply requires your time, your presence and your compassion.”
