Sailors and civilians from U.S. Naval Base Guam and various tenant commands have continued working at the Guam Veterans Cemetery in Piti to prepare it for Memorial Day.
Nearly 150 sailors and civilians have spent the past month removing debris and weed from gravesites, power washing the mausoleums and areas surrounding the cemetery chapel, cutting grass, and cleaning and shining the bronze grave markers throughout the cemetery.
3 APRA HARBOR, Guam (May 25, 2021) – The submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) conducted a change of command ceremony aboard the ship, May 25.
Capt. Andrew Ring, from Wilmore, Kansas, relieved Capt. Michael Luckett, from Banning, California, as Land’s commanding officer during the ceremony.
“I have been privileged and honored to serve as your captain, leading this incredibly talented and skilled hybrid crew of Sailors and civilian mariners,” said Luckett. “Through all of these ups and downs, you’ve always done your duty with honor trusting the shipmate to your left and to your right, being professionals taking care of the ship and your shipmates, and living up to the heritage and traditions of the tender Sailors who’ve gone before you. Thank you all for your energy, dedication, and teamwork.”

More than 5,000 veterans, their spouses and children are buried at the cemetery, including Navy Steward Mate 1st Class Ignacio C. Farfan, 21, of Hagåtña. Farfan s remains were identified in 2015 and returned to Guam in 2018, 77 years after he was killed in the attacks in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Farfan was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Farfan. Upon his return to Guam, he was buried with full military honors.
