Updated: Share Article AAA The U.S. Navy s Fifth Fleet said Sunday it had seized a huge cache of illicit Russian and Chinese weapons from a stateless dhow sailing in international waters of the North Arabian Sea. The Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, said the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey intercepted the vessel and discovered the cargo during a routine boarding, in a two-day operation on May 6-7. The cache of weapons included dozens of advanced Russian-made anti-tank guided missiles, thousands of Chinese Type 56 assault rifles, and hundreds of PKM machine guns, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades launchers, it said in a statement.

Shot fired as Iran, US navy vessels clash in Persian Gulf

Iran s Navy once again harassed US ships operating in the Persian Gulf, this time coming within 62 metres of the ships on Monday night, prompting one of the American ships to fire warning shots, according to Commander Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the US Navy s Fifth Fleet. Three fast inshore attack craft from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy came within 62m of the USS Firebolt, a Navy patrol coast ship, and the Coast Guard cutter Baranoff, Commander Rebarich said in a statement. The Iranian ships kept operating close to the US vessels despite repeated bridge-to-bridge warnings and the use of loud-hailer devices. In response, the Firebolt fired warning shots, Commander Rebarich said, at which point the Iranian ships backed away to a safe distance.

It was the second tense encounter at sea in less than a month, after about a year of no such incidents, and it coincided with high-stakes negotiations between Iran and world powers over its nuclear program. The three armed Iranian speed boats “rapidly approached” a U.S. Navy patrol coastal ship, the Firebolt, and a U.S. Coast Guard vessel, the Baranoff, on Monday evening in international waters at about 8 p.m. local time, the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet in Bahrain said in a statement.
