An aircraft crashed soon after takeoff from Nellis Air Force base near Las Vegas on Monday, killing the pilot.  The pilot, whose identity was not revealed, was the only person on board the Dassault Aviation Mirage F1 fighter jet.   According to officials, the crash involved a non-Air Force contractor-operated aircraft flown by a non-Air Force pilot. The contractor-operated aircraft  crashed outside the southern edge of the Nellis base around 2:30 p.m. local time Monday (5:30 p.m. ET).

The fast-attack sub returned from its six-month deployment where it “executed the chief of naval operations maritime strategy by supporting national security interests and maritime security operations,” according to the Navy.

Unmanned Helicopter Crashes Into Navy Ship

AVweb Image: U.S. Navy/Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Adam Butler An unmanned MQ-8B Fire Scout helicopter crashed into the side of USS Charleston shortly after taking off from the ship on Monday. No one was injured in the incident, but U.S. Navy officials reported that the aircraft fell into the water and was not recovered. The crash occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. local time. “The mishap damaged a safety net on the ship and struck the hull,” the U.S. Third Fleet said in a statement. “Damage to the ship is being assessed, but appears limited to an area above the waterline. Charleston continues operations in the Western Pacific.”
