Navy Commissions USS Miguel Keith in California

The Navy’s latest Expeditionary Sea Base ship officially entered the fleet on Saturday.
The service commissioned USS
Miguel Keith (ESB-5) in a ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., the service said in a statement.
The new ESB will be based out of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, according to the Navy.
“Capt. Troy A. Fendrick, a native of Tempe, Arizona, is the ship’s commanding officer and leads a crew of roughly 100 military officers and crew, alongside 44 Military Sealift Civil Service Mariners. The ship is 785 feet in length, has a beam of 164 feet, and a navigational draft of approximately 39 feet,” the Navy said.

Support is growing within the House Armed Services Committee to accelerate Navy efforts to improve ship repair capacity at both private and public shipyards, and for funding that either through ongoing talks about a massive federal infrastructure bill or other means, lawmakers made clear during a Thursday afternoon hearing.

The vice-chair of the House Armed Services Committee does not support the Navy’s “divest to invest” strategy of ridding the fleet of aging and expensive-to-maintain ships and systems to free up money for the development of unmanned platforms and other new technology, saying the sea service needs to focus on getting ready for a near-term battle instead of looking too far out into the future.

Chinese Navy to Help with Recovery of Indonesian Sub Wreck

KUALA LUMPUR – China has dispatched three ships to Indonesia to assist in the salvaging of the Indonesian attack submarine KRI
Nanggala (402). Two ships – the People’s Liberation Army Navy Ocean Tug
Nantuo-195 and PLAN Ocean Salvage and Rescue Ship
Yongxing Dao-863 – arrived on scene May 3 and the third ship, scientific research vessel
Tan Suo 2, is expected to arrive today.
Beijing had earlier made an offer to Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to assist with the salvaging of the submarine on a humanitarian basis and the offer was accepted, according to press reports. The Indonesian Navy is also in talks with SKK Migas, the country’s oil industry regulator, about conducting its own salvage operation. The Indonesian operation would involve the use of offshore support ship
