Navy, Lawmaker Split Over Timeline to Renovate Public Repair Yards

The Navy faces a conundrum in renovating its centuries-old public shipyards.
On one hand, the sooner the yards are redesigned with more efficient layouts and overhauled to have the latest tools and machines, the sooner yard employees can start repairing submarines and aircraft carriers at a faster pace and dig out of the maintenance backlog that plagued the sea service throughout the last decade.

The Navy has identified a sailor assigned to an amphibious warship based in Norfolk, Va., who died on Friday from complications related to COVID-19.
Aviation Support Equipment Technician 1st Class Marcglenn L. Orcullo, age 42 of Hawai, assigned to USS
Wasp (LHD-1), was hospitalized on Jan. 17 at Sentara Princess Anne hospital in Virginia Beach, Va., and then transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Jan. 29, according to ESG 2.
“We offer our condolences and join the sailor’s family, friends and shipmates in mourning the loss of this sailor. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” read a Friday statement.

Navy Will Vaccinate 5,000 Eisenhower Strike Group Sailors Just Days Ahead of Planned Deployment

The sailors of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group will receive their COVID-19 vaccines this weekend, just days ahead of pulling out of Norfolk, Va., for a second deployment in the past year, Navy officials said today during a media teleconference.
About 80 percent of the strike group, or about 5,000 sailors, have accepted an offer to be vaccinated against the virus that spurred a worldwide pandemic, created strict mitigation measures in the Navy, led to USS

Beijing Wants Arctic to Remain Peaceful, Chinese Diplomat Says

China’s top diplomat overseeing Arctic affairs recently stressed that Beijing wants the region to remain peaceful and stable, but recognizes competition – primarily economic for now – is real on several levels.
Speaking at an online Wilson Center forum on Monday, Gao Feng said, “I think we can continue the multilateral … situation in the Arctic” in dealing with questions of scientific research. He mentioned climate change, fisheries regulation, protection of indigenous peoples’ rights and infrastructure development ranging from building roads and bridges to establishing internet connectivity.

After coming through 2020 with record sales and growing its unmanned systems portfolio through acquisitions and partnerships, Huntington Ingalls Industries plans to use that momentum in 2021 to integrate its different business lines to help its customers tackle more complex challenges, the company president said today.
Noting the hardship of the pandemic in 2020 but the optimism of coming through it in a strong position, HII President and CEO Mike Petters told investors in a company earnings call today that, “from the very beginning, we viewed COVID-19 as a human capital crisis, and we made the decision to give the workforce the flexibility they needed to deal with the disruption in their personal lives. This, in turn, allowed us to preserve the significant investment we have made over the past five years hiring, training and qualifying our workforce so
