Leimert Park, one of L.A.’s few majority black neighborhoods, is a rare pandemic success story.
Last summer, Black Lives Matter protests and a Juneteenth celebration brought thousands to the neighborhood. Coming up on a year later, people are still showing up to buy streetwear made by Black designers or to taste the national dish of Jamaica.
With COVID-19 restrictions easing and an upcoming L.A. Metro stop, there’s anticipation that Leimert will be a destination for more than just the Black community.

On the heels of Long Beach approving its convention center for use as an emergency shelter for unaccompanied migrant children, the Pomona Fairplex has been announced as a second child migrant shelter in the L.A. area.
The Fairplex will temporarily house up to 2,500 migrant children who have been in the custody of U.S Customs and Border Protection. The federal government has already set up similar shelters at convention centers in San Diego and Dallas due to overcrowding at Border Patrol facilities. The idea is to shelter the children until they can be reunited with family members or sponsors in the U.S.

The Dodgers welcome fans back to Dodger Stadium today for the first time in a year and a half when they host the Washington Nationals.
Around 15,000 fans will be on hand to witness the presentation of the team’s 2020 World Series rings and the raising of its championship banner. They’ll fill a little more than one-quarter of the 56,000-seat stadium, allowing for safe distancing under coronavirus protocols, according to the team.
“I’ve been a fan since the early ‘80s,” an emotional Sonia Ozaeta said as she walked towards the stadium.”It’s huge for our family … we bleed blue … it’s just huge for us.”
